Sidney Simone Boria is a Puerto Rican-South African Artist, born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. She explores points of process on a spectrum of portraiture using water, fabric, paper and photography. Facets of identity surround Sidney’s work — she consults with materials and textures that speak to migration, home, and reflection. Sidney attributes her curiosities on the subjects to growing up in New York City surrounded & encompassed by vast diasporas.
STATEMENT:
My work often hints at duality — playing in the in-between of contrast. I create senses of both control and unrestricted motion in my work. Water is used to accept reality in what I can and cannot control. This medium allows for bleeding, absorption, weathering, and impressions that draw forward notions of navigation and healing. These notions are emphasized through physical (ex. sewing) and non-physical (ex. waiting) tasks. The labor of these tasks builds into tactile layers, where complexities through texture promote a cosmic understanding between reason and emotion.
